The Story Of 904L: From Chemical Vats to Deep-Sea Diving
The Acid Test: initially, the ancestors of 904L (like the French Uranus B6) were developed in the mid-20th century for a very unglamorous purpose: surviving the brutal environments of sulfuric acid production. Standard steels would dissolve in these tanks, so metallurgists “supercharged” the alloy with copper and extra nickel to create a metal that could literally sit in acid without flinching. The material’s transition from industrial pipes to luxury icon began in the 1970s and 80s through a partnership between Rolex and the French diving company COMEX. COMEX used 904L for their diving bells because it was one of the few materials that could withstand the high-pressure, chloride-rich environments of deep-sea saturation diving without pitting.
