254SMO S31254 Round Bars

254SMO (UNS S31254) is a ‌high-alloy austenitic stainless steel‌ specifically developed for maximum resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in chloride-containing environments

Its superior composition includes:

  • Nickel (Ni)‌: ≈20% (enhances corrosion resistance and stability)
  • Chromium (Cr)‌: ≈20% (provides excellent oxidation resistance and general corrosion protection)
  • Molybdenum (Mo)‌: ≈6.5% (significantly boosts resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion)
  • Copper (Cu)‌: Added to improve resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing acids
  • Nitrogen (N)‌: Increases strength and corrosion resistance without raising carbon content
  • Low Carbon (C)‌: ≤0.02% (minimizes the risk of sensitization and intergranular corrosion)

Similar Grades‌:

  • UNS S31254 (USA), 1.4547 (DIN/Europe), Alloy 254 (trade name)

Outstanding Performance Characteristics

Exceptional Corrosion Resistance‌:

  • Superior to standard 300-series stainless steels, particularly in chloride-rich environments.
  • High resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in warm seawater and acidic media.
  • Excellent performance in sulfuric, phosphoric, and hydrochloric acids, as well as chloride-induced SCC.

High Mechanical Strength‌:

  • Tensile strength: typically ≥620 MPa (90 ksi)
  • Yield strength: ≥450 MPa (65 ksi)
  • Maintains mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for high-temperature applications.

Excellent Weldability & Fabricability‌:

  • Easily welded using standard techniques such as TIG, MIG, and submerged arc welding.
  • Good formability in both hot and cold conditions, allowing for the manufacture of complex shapes.

Production Techniques

254SMO round bars are meticulously produced through:

Melting & Casting‌:

  • Employs advanced melting methods like vacuum induction melting (VIM) or electric arc melting (EAF) to ensure high purity.
  • Continuous casting or ingot casting processes, followed by hot rolling to form initial billets.

Thermal Processing‌:

  • Hot working at temperatures between 1000°C and 1200°C (1832°F to 2192°F) for shaping and sizing.
  • Solution annealing at 1010°C to 1150°C (1850°F to 2102°F) followed by rapid cooling to optimize microstructure and corrosion resistance.

Finishing‌:

  • Cold drawing, grinding, or polishing to achieve precise dimensions and desired surface finishes.

Wide Range of Applications

254SMO round bars are essential in:

  • Chemical Processing‌: Reactors, heat exchangers, and storage tanks handling highly corrosive chemicals.
  • Oil & Gas‌: Pipelines, valves, and downstream equipment in sour gas and high-temperature, high-pressure environments.
  • Marine Engineering‌: Offshore platforms, seawater desalination plants, and other marine applications requiring extreme corrosion resistance.
  • Power Generation‌: Flue gas desulfurization systems, nuclear reactor components, and other critical power plant infrastructure.
  • Pharmaceutical & Biotech‌: Equipment for the production and storage of corrosive pharmaceuticals and biotechnological products.

In demanding industrial environments, the integrity of a structure often depends on its smallest components: the fasteners. 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Bolts have emerged as the “workhorse” of the industry, offering a superior alternative to standard grades like 316. Understanding why we need these high-performance Alloy 2205 Bolting solutions requires looking at their unique chemistry, history, and the critical roles they play across global industries.

Manufacturing 904L bolts is significantly more difficult than manufacturing standard 304 or 316 grades. While 904L is highly ductile, its high nickel (25%) and molybdenum (4.5%) content make it extremely tough and prone to rapid work-hardening,  When welding 904L studs or components, use matching filler metals (e.g., 20 25 CuL) and avoid pre-heating to prevent hot cracking. Use Tri-Roll Thread Comparators and calibrated gauges to ensure precision, as 904L is prone to galling (seizing) during assembly if threads are not perfect.

In the demanding industrial landscape of 2026, the integrity of a project depends entirely on the fasteners used. Whether securing a jet engine component operating at extreme temperatures or erecting an offshore wind turbine, the choice of material and specification is critical for safety, longevity, and performance.
As a premier manufacturer, we specialize in high-precision fastening solutions tailored for extreme environments, featuring advanced materials like Incoloy A286.
